Web Service vs ASP.NET Web API and implementing Web API

Hi, 

I am new to web service and Web API.

Need to know practicle things which we can do with WEB API and not with web service, which can demonstrate, why we should prefer WEB API over WEB Serveice.

Need example except web service using SOAP,XML etc, if any.
