Difference between Singleton Design Pattern and Static methods in C# .Net

Hi,

    In one of the interview, I was asked why should we have to go for Single Design pattern, instead of just creating static methods. Because creating static methods also serve the same purpose, i.;e avoiding flooding of objects. I will be very thankful, if some body can answer me. Thanks.
